Are you having fun yet?

December 18, 2011

Great Sunday Everyone.

I hope your all staying centered and calm during this holiday season.  Today I’m going to briefly talk about fun! Many times we take the fun out of life, sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously. Fun is one of the most powerful forces and elements that need to be present for us to be happy and healthy.  Are you having fun….?  Ponder my questions below.

Can you be the life of the party when you want to? Can you bring a spirit of playfulness wherever you go? Do you have fun in your everyday activities?

Here’s a few challenges you might be facing if your Power of Fun is faltering:

  • You’re so bored with life (or exhausted from your day) you just flop down in the couch every night and pass the hours in front of the TV until you fall asleep.
  • The first thing you do when you’re out with friends or at a social gathering is get a drink of alcohol so you can loosen up.
  • You don’t do anything that wasn’t planned out ahead of time.
  • You keep your nose to the grindstone, work hard and follow the rules….but you’re burned out, unhappy, and have no social life.
  • Life seems filled with drudgery – it’s all chores, responsibilities, and hard work.
All work and no play is no fun at all!

If you don’t remember the last time you had some pure, joyful, childlike fun, you’re in for such a treat. When you strengthen your inner Power of Fun, the whole world will look brighter!  It’s like letting the YELLOW sunshine in.

  • You’ll find activities to fill your evenings and weekends that give you energy and leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed and happy.
  • Fun will ooze out of your pores – enlivening conversation, finding games to play, goofing around. You’ll be the life of the party, without having to rely on alcohol or drugs.
  • You might just occasionally throw your plans to the wind, be spontaneous, and discover something magical.
  • You’ll balance your work ethic with vacation time, game night, and playing with friends, bolstering your health and happiness along the way.
  • The daily activities of life will be fun and engaging because you’ll instinctively know what’s needed to spice them up and make them more entertaining for you.
After reading the above, take some time to reflect and see where your fun factor is… high.. low? See what needs to be done to bring the fun back into your life or ramp up your fun meter even more.
Have an amazing day everyone.
Be well,
Matt

Let your body tell you what it should eat.

December 4, 2011

Good Sunday Everyone:

This blog is the last of my multiple-part series discussing knowing what to eat. As I have talked about in earlier posts, when you are deciding what to put in your mouth, the first consideration is determining if it is a real food or a non-food. Then you fine-tune your ratio of proteins, carbs and fats using the feedback loop your body gives you on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. Lastly, you muscle-test yourself and ask your soul what foods to eat. Before you start to form opinions on this technique, let me briefly explain the premise behind it. Muscle-testing is based on the standard muscle strength test developed by Kendall, Kendall, and Wadsorth used to determine muscle disabilities. Muscle-testing works by using the biophysical and mechanical links between muscles, joints, nerves and organs to identify specific requirements and body imbalances. The mechanics of muscle-testing and soul-asking can be also explained in terms of a subconscious mental response. The subconscious mind that controls the internal body functions knows what foods and substances the body needs. The body is always in perfect alignment with the subconscious, so it always accurately reflects its needs. Therefore, you never have to rely on or be a slave to someone else’s ideas of what you should eat. WHY? Because you are the boss!

A very quick and relatively easy way to do self-testing is as follows:

1. Make a duckbill (touching the thumb and index finger together on your dominate hand with constant pressure).
2. Assess your capacity to stabilize against opening the duckbill by your opposite index finger and thumb.
3. Now simply feel how much pressure you can resist before opening the duckbill.
4. Ask your body, “Show me a Yes” and test your ability to resist opening.
5. Next: “Show me a No” and test again.
6. Notice how strong your “Yes” is relative to your “No”.

After that, simply ask yourself yes or no questions relating to food and see what you come up with.  You need to disconnect from any attachment or outcome to get an accurate response and also be able to listen and feel with your body.

So there you have it: some great tools to figure out if what you are eating is what your body wants.

Good luck with your experimentation.

So what the heck do I eat then? part 2

November 9, 2011
Hello Everyone:
My apologies for the time since my last blog, as I’ve been busy preparing to open my new space at 811 Williamson Street in Madison, WI. The Inside Out Wellness Lifestyle Center will offer personal training, nutrition, yoga, wellness related lectures, events, demonstrations, and much more.  Come down and see the new beautiful space!
My last blog left off talking about my funnel approach to nutrition and how the biggest impact we can have on our overall health is simply eating real food and eliminating all non-foods out of the diet.
Today I want to take you one step further down the funnel so you can begin to customize and “fine-tune” your diet to meet your individual nutrient requirements.  There are some very basic ways in which your body provides you feedback on whether or not what you’re eating is working or not working.  Those categories are the following; Appetite, Sweet Cravings, Energy Levels, mental and emotional well-being, your current stress levels, geographic location, monthly rhythms, genetic background and activity. These factors all play a huge roll in what type and how much of a certain food you should be eating.  For example, if you’re working out frequently, have high to moderate stress, and are living in northern climates during the winter months, pay attention to how much fat and protein you are eating as these are very important.
Once you get good at listening to your body around these certain areas, you can then begin to navigate your own nutritional journey.  It takes some time so don’t get frustrated if you feel the same on ALL foods.  That’s actually a very common response when I ask people to “test” certain foods in their diet.  The reason is most people are completely detached from their bodies and how food makes them feel.  By paying attention to the signals your body is gives you, you become more conscious of everything.  Begin experimenting by listening to your body more and see what you discover!  Lastly, I suggest that you chart what you ate and how it made you feel so you can directly link “reactions” with certain foods.
Good Luck.
